The Spirit Bear Quilt Pattern
Some designs arrive like a whisper. Spirit Bear did—quiet, grounded, and a little wild at heart. I wanted a throw that felt steady and strong: bear paws stepping through light and shadow, a calm center, and star-like corners to guide the eye. Ochre and white keep it simple and striking, but the feeling is what matters—something you’ll reach for on cool mornings and slow evenings.
This is a modern-classic Bear Paw quilt with a framed center and QST cornerstones. It’s graphic, meditative to sew, and gift-worthy without being fussy.
Skill Level: Intermediate
What’s Included (and why you’ll love it)

- Clear cutting charts and efficient HST/QST methods

- Printer-friendly PDF with clean, minimal layout
- 100% original pattern
- Downloadable PDF
Design Features
- Four bold Bear Paw blocks surrounding a grounded wide center panel

- Crisp two-color palette that showcases quilting (machine or big-stitch hand quilting)
- Works beautifully in solids, hand-dyed, tonal, or scrappy backgrounds
Construction & Techniques

- HSTs (8-at-a-time)
- QSTs (2-at-a-time)
- Straightforward block assembly
Materials & Specs
- Finished Size: 55" × 62" (throw)
- All Exshaw Quilts patterns assume 42" usable WOF and ¼" seam allowance
Fabric & supplies:
- Feature (ochre): 2¼ yards
- Background (white): 1¾ yards
- Backing: 3½ yards
- Batting: 59" × 66"
- Binding: ½ yard
- Basic notions and quilting supplies
Sometimes the best makes are the steady ones—the kind that settle your shoulders as you sew. Spirit Bear is rhythmic, piece by piece, until the paws and borders come together and the whole top feels like a deep breath.
