Alright, let’s learn how to make the 12" x 12" Birds in the Air quilt block in this beginner-friendly tutorial. This is the January 2026 installment of our Block of the Month series—start from here.

Let’s quilt something meaningful, together.
January’s Block: bird’s in the Air
The Bird’s in the Air was first pieced (on record) by Ruth Finley in The Old Patchwork Quilts in 1929. I took artistic liberty (which I always suggest you do 😉) and flipped it. So instead of birds in the air, its more birds on the ground lol. Anyway, I love the simplicity of this both and the negative space it creates. It’s one of my most loved designs and one of the best sellers I offer over at One Trick Pony Goods.
